In today's column I look at the largest companies in Europe: these are in comparatively good shape, but are growing older. For Europe to renew its stable of "champions", several changes would be especially desirable. High among them come better universities, less fragmented service markets, better finance for high-growth SMEs, and reducing the manufacturing-industry bias in the way policymakers tend to think about the economy.
