The International Economy, the specialised quarterly, this fall published a 'face-off' section in which I argue that investment protectionism is increasingly a matter for concern, while the Financial Times' world trade editor Alan Beattie does not consider it real protectionism to begin with.

Europe's Banking Challenge: Reregulation without Refragmentation

CESifo Forum, a publication of the CESifo research group based in Munich, this month published this piece of mine, which elaborates on a presentation at I gave at the European Parliament in May. I analyse the need for an EU prudential supervisor for financial services firms, and identify possible key features.

The Route Back to Credit

In today's column, I argue that for those European banks that are no longer strong enough to raise equity on the marketplace and stand alone that way, there are only three options available: (1) being taken over by another bank, often from a different country, (2) accepting capital from the private equity industry, or (3) being partly or completely nationalised.

Governments should prepare the ground for such outcomes, even as they will be controversial in some countries.
