The Peterson Institute published this Policy Brief last week, in which I present a novel dataset of the ownership and governance structures of all significant banks (as they are called in EU regulatory jargon) headquartered in the euro area, and compare them with banks of similar significance in Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The data show a striking contrast between, on the one hand, the dominance of listed banks with dispersed ownership in the English-speaking countries, and on the other hand, much more diverse governance structures in the euro area, which allow for considerably greater government interference and politicization.
