This paper, co-author with Madi Sarsenbayev, was uploaded by the Peterson Institute this week following its publication in late March in the China & World Economy Journal. We take stock of China's Belt & Road Initiative and its implications for Europe, including some comparative perspective with the United States, and make a few recommendations on how best to manage future developments.
The article was first prepared for the eighth CF40-PIIE Economists Symposium held in Beijing in May 2019, and the updated version was finalized before the Covid-19 outbreak became a pandemic. Its focus takes renewed significance as the current crisis is bound to accelerate ongoing changes in the system of international relations.
